Delivery & Collecton FAQs
Can you explain the delivery costs to me?
We are a specialist tree nursery in the South West, we grow, care for, pick and pack your order from our own nursery, and use dedicated vans to expertly deliver directly from the nursery to you. We don’t use package distribution centres, so delivery costs reflects the distance and expense of travelling from our nursery to you. For this reason the delivery cost stays the same no matter how many plants are on your order.
Our plants are large, delicate, living purchases, not boxes that can be thrown in the back of a delivery van. Most of our trees are also very long items and can’t be delivered in a box or car like your average online retailer would! So all of our stock is loaded into vans at our nursery that will then drive directly to the delivery sites.
We pride ourselves on the care we take to ensure your order gets to you in top condition.
Can you deliver outside mainland UK?
Unfortunately not. The time and costs involved in transporting trees with our own vehicles across waterways to islands makes it unviable.
How will my order be delivered?
Our courteous delivery team will transport your purchases with great care to make sure they reach you in the best condition possible.
- We will offload your trees safely from the lorry to the front of your property.
- We’ll arrive in a 3.5-ton curtain-sided lorry (2.1m/7’ wide) or long wheelbase van.
- We’re unable to lift plants over walls, fences or take them through buildings, and our vehicles cannot drive over grass or landscaped areas.
- Please let us know if you think it will be difficult to access your address so we can work out a solution.

Do I need to be at home to receive the delivery?
No, as long as you are happy for us to leave the trees outside your property (e.g. on a driveway or in your front garden). Trees left at your property normally will be left lying down so they are not damaged by being blown over. If rabbits are a problem, let us know so we can find a solution.
How will my plants and trees arrive?
Bare root
Bare root trees and plants are dormant plants that are dug up for you from the field and shipped without soil. Due to their dormant state they have seasonal availability and are delivered between November and March, packaged without foliage or soil. They will arrive with bags around the roots to conserve moisture.
Container
Container grown trees and plants arrive planted in a pot with compost. They are available all year round.
How do I collect my order?
You can collect your order Monday to Friday 08:30-16:00 and 8:00-16:30 on Saturdays.
You can collect 24 hours after you have ordered, just provide your chosen collection date during checkout. If on the rare occasion, it will be longer than 24 hours, we will contact you immediately.
If you’ve ordered a container grown tree, you can choose it yourself when you get here, just let us know this is what you would like to do in the checkout process. Bare roots will be chosen for you and dug up fresh for your arrival.
We can help you load your vehicle.
What transport do I need?
During checkout, if you choose to collect your order, will give you advice specific to your order as to what transport you will need.
15L pot sizes trees and smaller, and 6/8cm girth size bare root trees.
- You will need a medium sized car.
- Several trees can be transported this way, as long as the rear seats fold down (it's best not to bring any more than one passenger).
- Bare root hedging orders of less than 500 whips will easily fit into a car.
- However if you are buying 5 or more, you will need bigger transport.
- Sometimes, some of these smaller trees - such as poplar and willow - are fast growers and may be very tall, so we will advise you if you need a bigger vehicle.
20L, 30L and 8/10cm girth size bare root trees and larger.
- Our delivery service is usually the best option, or bring a bigger vehicle.
- Note that some short wheel base vans can often have less room in than a car.
- Single axle and small axle trailers (under 4ft/1.2m long) are not suitable for transporting trees. Often trailers less than 8ft long cannot carry trees.
- Trees must be transported lying down.
- In summer, trees need to be inside a vehicle or have the pot or roots wrapped to prevent them drying out while you transport them.
If you’re unsure, contact us and we will be happy to advise.
If you’re unable to make your agreed collection date, please call us immediately so that we can care for your plants in the meantime.
What do I do with my plants when I receive them?
We will provide planting information and aftercare advice with your order. You can also find lots of information in our guides section.
Bare root plants can be kept in a cool, sheltered place for a few days. If you can’t plant them within a few days, you need to temporarily cover the roots with soil. Just dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roots, place the roots in this and cover them with damp soil, firming in with your heel. Sounds like planting, but much less thorough! And the tree can be rested at an angle rather than staked upright. The idea is just to keep the roots cool and moist. You can find out more information in the this guide.
Plants in containers can be kept for weeks in their pots, as long as they are watered every day in spring and summer. Keep them somewhere where they won't blow over or be damaged by pests.
Don’t dig holes in advance! Holes dug before receipt of trees are invariably too large (they need only be a third bigger than the pot or as wide as the roots) and can be affected by weather, filling with water or drying out, which is detrimental to the establishment of the tree. You can find more information in this guide.
More advice on what to do after you receive your trees can be found in these guides:
