Why February Is the Ideal Month to Plant Trees
2nd Feb 2026
1.Strong Root Establishment Before Spring and Summer
One of the biggest advantages of February planting is the amount of time trees have to establish roots before they face stress from warmer weather.
Trees planted now benefit from:
- Several months of uninterrupted root development
- Reduced transplant shock
- Improved access to moisture and nutrients
By the time spring growth accelerates, February-planted trees are already anchored and actively supporting new shoots and leaves. When summer arrives, these trees are far better equipped to cope with dry conditions than those planted later in the year.
2. The Perfect Month for Bare Root Hedging and Container-Grown Trees
February sits within the bare root planting season, making it an excellent time to take advantage of this cost-effective and traditional planting method. We have a wide range of native species ideal for hedging and woodland creation.
It is also an ideal time for container-grown trees, as dormant planting reduces stress, while container stock offers flexibility on timing and site conditions. Most of our container trees and shrubs are grown outside on our nursery in Somerset, meaning they are fully hardy and able to be planted out year round.
