Tree Nursery Worker - Chew Valley Trees

Chew Valley Trees are looking for someone to work on our tree nursery, to be involved in production, maintenance and order fulfilment. The ideal candidate will be a hardworking, self-motivated person who can fulfil a wide range of tasks. Excellent plant knowledge will also be required, though there is potential for the right candidate to learn on the job.

Work environment

To be able to undertake all of the tasks expected of you, it is of prime importance that you are physically fit. We work outside all the year round and in all weathers on a whole range of nursery and landscaping activities. Although most tasks will be nursery-based, this role is flexible and will sometimes involve making deliveries and working on landscaping projects.

Nursery worker role

The nursery grows about 300 varieties of trees in a range of sizes from 7L to 230L pots. In the winter we supply bare root trees and hedging. Many customers come to the nursery to select and collect, and many new customers find us through our online shop www.chewvalleytrees.co.uk. The high number of web orders we receive means that we dispatch over most of southern England and beyond.

Nursery-based tasks will chiefly involve:

Order collation - picking and preparing orders for collection and dispatch
Restocking - moving stock and filling gaps in the public 'showroom'
Container production - potting, caning and tying-in (in winter and spring); irrigation and weed control (summer and autumn)
Field production - grounds maintenance at our field production site, in addition to caning and tying-in etc.
Advising customers - supporting sales team by helping customers locate and choose plants

Training in all aspects of work will be given, however existing plant identification skills and good knowledge of trees and shrubs is essential for this role.

A clean driving licence is essential. Previous experience of use and care of mowers and strimmers will be an advantage as will PA1 & PA6 certificates.

Jobs are usually undertaken in teams of two, though at times you may have to work alone. The teams are not fixed and are rotated to utilise the range of skills in the company.

The role requires liaising with office staff and drivers on a regular basis, so good communication skills are also key to the smooth running of operations.

Landscaping

Occasionally, the nursery worker will be called on to contribute to landscaping projects. We plant trees of all sizes from whips to semi-mature, plus shrub borders and hedges.  We are responsible for follow up maintenance on many of the sites and this requires us to mow grass and weed shrub borders. This often involves the spraying of herbicides.

We work for private estates and in domestic gardens, and also for construction companies and public utilities, mainly within 50 miles of Chew Magna but it can be farther. Contracts can take as little as a few hours to several months for the most complex.

Job progression

Increased responsibility on the nursery will require a very high level of plant knowledge to be able to confidently advise customers on the plants they require for their gardens. With increased experience, it will also be expected that you are able to train new members of staff.

You will be expected to lead the staff you are in charge of by example, demonstrating high standards of workmanship. We anticipate that you will be able to solve problems using your own initiative.

Hours of work

Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with 28 days paid holiday (including Bank Holidays). You may also be required to work some Saturdays depending on the needs of the nursery.

Contract: Permanent position

Salary: £18,500 - £22,000 Depending on experience

Applications: Please email a CV and cover letter to simon@chewvalleytrees.co.uk
