Available as a small tree or as a shrub this species begins to look attractive in bud just as the silvery leaves unfold in April. A striking mass of tiny white star-shaped flowers then burst at the end of each shoot in an upright conical spire. Simultaneously the unfolding leaves take on a pale copper-bronze in an unrivalled spring display. During the summer the oval leaves become a mid-green, then in autumn become all shades of dazzling orange and red by which time it's small berries have become edible. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade.
