Large-sized native tree, ideally suited for damp ground as it is usually found growing alongside rivers and streams. The leaves are rounded with a distinctive notched tip. Catkins ripen in spring, then the female catkins become woody 'cones' remaining on the tree through winter. Rabbits dislike the bark.
