A large, deciduous tree native to southern England providing a glorious sight when planted as a single specimen or small copse whatever the time of year. Often used as a hedge plant when leaves are retained through the winter by regular trimming. Fresh, apple green leaves emerge in spring from long slender buds to cast a heavy shade, then in autumn leaves turn yellow to red-brown. Hairy fruits, or 'beech mast', ripen in autumn to release edible, triangular nuts. Grows in most soils apart from waterlogged, in sun or partial shade.
