A large tree of vigorous, upright habit, native to Europe but with considerable doubt as to its origin in Britain. Makes a good avenue tree and is commonly used for street planting due to its ability to withstand hard-pruning. However, avoid planting near parked cars as aphids feed on the leaves causing sticky leaf-sap to fall below! The dark green leaves are hairy on top and on the underside, with a hairy leaf stalk. The young shoots are bright red and can be easily pleached. Creamy-white flowers appear before other limes in late June providing a valuable source of nectar for bees. Prefers sun or semi-shade on fertile, well-drained soil.
