TILIA CORDATA Small Leaved Lime

This large, deciduous tree is native to limestone areas in England and Wales and favoured for the planting of stately avenues. The mature outline is tall and slender with downward arching branches. The botanical name 'cordata' refers to its heart-shaped leaves. These are dark green and shiny on top with tufts of orange hair on the underside and a hairless leaf stalk. The dense leaf canopy make this a valuable tree for providing shade. Sweet-scented flowers appear in early July. Prefers sun or semi-shade on fertile, well-drained soil.
