Broadleaved Tree & Shrub Whips
Acer - Maple
Acers, the Maples, are a large family with over a hundred species of deciduous trees and shrubs occuring in all northern temperate regions. Maple leaves are easily recognised and are generally palmately lobed. Acers also include the Japanese Maples.
Many Maples have excellent autumn colour. The flowers are small and are followed by characteristic winged fruit called keys.
There is only one native maple, the hedging shrub Acer campestre, though others have naturalised.
